Koi Miniatures # 2
September 9, 2009

Here is the second set of koi miniatures. In my subsequent painting of koi, I can see that I have improved my skill in scrubbing out ripples from the background. I find that it takes a lot of elbow grease to do the scrubbing and get this result.

These Koi are beautiful. you might want to try frisket to keep the whites really white, or a wax resist technique which will keep the whites sorta white. With the wax, unless you rub it on really hard, it only sits on the top of the bumps of the cold press paper. You could always scrub more out later too.
No matter how you did it, the fish are great and the ripples really are wonderful!

Thanks Carol. I have tried using wax on sea waves before. For this painting I thought scrubbing was a good way to highlight the ripples. Moreover I wanted to expose the underpainting and the stain from the top layer paint in the highlight.

I like the small fish in the first painting..
As the image slowly unfolded on the page (Owing to net speed here), that fish being to first to load just looked amazing…

Thanks Ramana! Your comment made my day! I can imagine the images slowly unveiling themselves.

Hi
These fish are lovely.Have you seen the fish by Utagawa Kuniyoshi? – there’s a similar feel in the movement you’ve captured.
