Fresh Catch of the Day 2
I really don’t know what to make out of this drawing in colored pencil. I am in what you can call a stagnant mode. Not really impressed with my recent paintings. Maybe it is the colored pencils that I am using. Perhaps it is not my medium. The time consumption factor and the general dissatisfaction make me question whether I should continue to explore the colored pencil drawing. I am really not sure.

Improved Version
As per Veda’s and RKV’s suggestion, I made some improvements. What you see is before in the left and after in the right. I think it looks better now. What do you say?
BJ Again
I got a reference photo from BJ with her three-fourth profile. The profile was challenging since this was my first time with such an angle. I recently bought conté crayons sketching set from the local art store. So the colors used were limited to sanguine, sepia, charcoal, 2B graphite and white. I did lots and lots of scrubbing with a paper towel to blend the colors. Tortillons and cotton earbuds are good substitute for blending. The good thing was I could erase the colors with a kneaded erasor but only to a certain extent. So a stain always remained especially in area where the conté crayons were heavily applied.
I think conté crayons is a good transition for me after using graphite for so long. A good transition for me to use colors in portraiture. I want to try out this sketching set before I invest in colored crayon pencils. Now that the holiday season is approaching, there are lots of sales going on in internet art supply stores. There aren’t a lot of tutorials on how to use conté crayons in the blog world or internet. So I am learning on the go. It seems it is not a popular medium and you can see it is mostly used in mixed media type of arts. Since it is mainly composed of graphite with kaolin clay as binder, there is a lot of hesistation among the artists to put conté crayon pencils under colored pencil category. You can also get conté crayons in stick ; the same as you see in pastel sticks. Since I hate the chalky feeling on my fingers, I opted out of sticks. Oh and another thing, the drawings are easily smudgable. But again, you can erase them off with a kneaded erasor.

Portrait: Sue and Stan
This is the portrait drawing of Stan and his wife Sue. Stan is my former classmate and I know him for around 17 years (gasp!). Double portrait are usually challenging and this portraiture fits that fact. I spend a long time working on Sue compared to Stan. Stan’s thick hair drove me crazy. Now that this portrait is over, I am so relieved.

Portrait
After seeing my self-portrait, my sweet cousin expressed interest in having her portrait drawn. So here it is. I drew this using one of her photo as a reference. It was taken just a few hours before her marriage. She might have felt quite different that day. I liked the simplicity and elegance in how she looked in the photo…and I have a weakness for mundum neriyathum set.

Self-Portrait Series No.2
Isn’t it fun drawing your own portrait? You get to be your own model. I really enjoyed doing this. I used just an HB pencil and a 0.7mm mechanical pencil. A cotton earbud and a kneaded eraser were used for blending. For this drawing, I took a photo of myself but the lighting was poor so I couldn’t get all the details. From the final result I can say, this drawing is not perfect and is not an exact resemblance but the essential features are there. I am okay with this because I am doing it for myself. Another challenge was drawing the downcast eyes. Well, posing like this was my idea anyways….I am planning to do a series on self-portrait. I am sure I am gonna have a great time doing them.

Portrait : Asin
I am really delighted with the outcome of drawing this portrait. I feel like I have improved in my drawing skills to render almost the exact likeness of the person in this portrait. On the other hand, I can say her features are so simple it is easy to get such a close resemblance. I am finding it difficult to accept this progress in my drawing skill. Maybe the next protrait will help clarify this lingering doubt in me. 😀
As for the drawing, I left out the details of her top to bring the focus back to her face. I was able to achieve a big improvement in drawing hair. That is a big thumb-up for me. This time I paid more attention to the value of the shade. I believe that helps a lot in achieving a realistic portrait.
For those who don’t know Asin, I will introduce her as a south-indian film personality. From what I have read and heard about her, I can say she is the most professional actress in the industry. I wish her all the success in her life.
